Children placed in a government-operated orphanage
usually remain in the system until they are 18 year old. Then they are
"discharged." For most of the young people, they have no home to return
to, no family to help them out, no job skills, and no prospects of
employment. These problems are of great concern not only to the
Ukrainians but also to WGM. Presently, WGM is researching ways to
address these problems.
The orphanages themselves can only keep
the children until they are 14 or 15 years old and then they are sent to a
boarding Technical School (similar to an orphanage but for older
youth). In the Primorsk region, there are 85 orphans and 246
children from undesirable homes who are presently under the
administration of "Child Protective Services" plus 63 youth who are
in legal trouble.
Additionally, over the course of
any given year, over 200 infants (from birth to 3 years) are
abandoned or "given" to this administration. These infants are
taken to the local hospital and are cared for until they are
thoroughly checked out medically and they have all the paper work
for them to be sent to a main orphanage in Zaproishia (the state
capital). They usually stay in the hospital from two to four
months depending on the child. They come in with little or no
clothing - just wrapped in a blanket.
WGM ministers in two government-operated orphanages
in Ukraine: "First Stage Orphanage" in Berdyansk, and "Economical and
Social Deprived Orphanage" in Primorsk. (We are using these names to
explain their function - these are not their Ukrainian names.)
Additionally, we are always looking for ways to
expand this ministry. Recently, we were able to help a hospital/care
center that is helping those children who are orphaned, handicapped,
and/or sick in Primorsk.
